How To Analyze SEO of Competitor Using SEMRush in 10 Steps

Previously, we have written How To Use SEMRush Market Explorer to research about your market, now we will dive into more technical things, SEO of competitor. SEMRush is very useful for analyzing the SEO of any website. They have more than 20 billion of keyword database, making them one of the best data provider for SEO and SEM.

In the previous article, we pretended to be a marketer of Systeme.io a tool for sales funnel builders, now we will pretend to become a more specific business, which is Sqribble, a software to create an ebook.

Sqribble has a competitor which is Designrr. Both are eBook creator software but they have their own advantages. Sqribble is more for freelancers, while Designrr intended more for the eBook creator.

Enough about the background. Let’s dive deeper into this. We will analyze Designrr because we acted as a Sqribble marketer.

Step 1 – Go to dashboard and put designrr.io in the textbox

By typing the domain, you will get suggestion, but we will focus on domain analytics. By looking in the brief overview, we can know the landscape of our competitor.

There are also many tools that really useful for SEO in the sidebar. You can find whichever suits your needs. You can also go to our page which has SEMRush tools .

Step 2 – Analyze the Domain Overview

In this domain overview, you can analyze many things briefly such as organic search, paid search, backlinks, display advertising, and many more. You can also export this page to PDF. I have exported it and will put it in the premium content of this website, which you can access just by sign up for our newsletter.

Looking in this overview will really help you to know your competitor. What is their strength and your position.

Step 3 – Go to Organic Research of Designrr.io

Here we will get the organic research of the competitor website. You can analyze the traffic trends of the competitor website. You will know

  1. Keywords” is how many keywords they are ranking for,
  2. “Traffic” is how many traffic they get per month
  3. “Traffic Cost” is how much the value of the traffic,
  4. Branded Traffic” is traffic that come to the website with keyword WITH their name
  5. “Non-Branded Traffic” is traffic that come to the website with keyword WITHOUT their name
  6. You can also see the traffic chart over time.

There is many brief information on this page, but for the sake of secret, we will not disclose it all here. Again, I have exported the PDF of this report and will put it somewhere in the premium content area of this blog.

Step 4 – Go To Backlinks Analytics

For Off-Page SEO, this is the most precious report. You can see the backlinks that goes into your competitor. You can get a lot of ideas to do link building based on your competitor backlinks list. By the way, you can export all the backlinks here, and it is easier than Ahrefs Backlink analysis tool. In Ahrefs you should export specify the amount and the amount will be deducted from the quota. Meanwhile in the SEMRush, there is no quota for backlinks so you can export it freely.

Step 5 – Analyze Advertising Research

On this page, you can find out what is your competitor’s bidding in PPC. It is simple, if your competitor bid it, then it may bring them profit. It is not certain though. You can see the CPC. If the CPC is expensive, it is maybe competitive keyword that brings them profit. Again, you have to see many factors here such as the landing page, search volume, etc. For SEO specialists, you can collect keywords that can be used for you.

This page will be really helpful for an SEM specialist. You can know which keywords you need to target.

Step 6 – Go to PLA Research

PLA is product listing ads. Something like this

In this analytics, you can analyze your competitor PLA. it is very useful if your site is ecommerce or marketplace. You can see many PLA that they use to design your own PLA.

Step 7 – Go to Display Advertising for advertiser

This section will list all the display ads SEMRush knows. You can see also their ads example here.

This section is really interesting. You can know which ads seen frequently, which will likely be their best performing ads.

Step 8 – Go to Traffic Analytics

In this section, you can see how much traffic your competitor get. This traffic info will let you know where is your position against the competitor. If you haven’t launch your product or features yet, the you can know how much traffic are there in the current market for that specific niche.

Step 9 – Go to Keyword Gap

This is also one of the best sections for SEO specialists, keyword gaps. It is where your competitor ranked for but not you. It is a “gap”. If they are ranked for then you may also be ranked for it because you have the same niche or even the same functionality.

You can find the valuable keyword you must rank for by looking at their ranked keyword. You can then make a better content, better on-page SEO, and also better offpage SEO.

Step 10 – Go to Backlinks Gap

This tool is also holy grail of Off-Page SEO. You can use this to find backlinks for your site. It will list the website that link to your competitors, but not you. Put more than 3 website (1 your website, and 2+ your competitors). It will work like charm and suggest you where your competitor get backlink but you don’t.

You can then build link the website given. Those website maybe open for link building, or you can comment there, and so on.
